Berlin Mitte has a number of attractions that represent the symbiosis of old and new, of West and East. Bellevue Palace, the Reichstag building, the Kanzleramt (Chancellor's Office) and the Philharmonic Hall give way to the exciting modern architecture of Potsdamer Platz. Berlin's Museum Island, Gendarmenmarkt and Tiergarten are just a stone's throw away from Brandenburg Gate, while the lovingly restored Hackesche Höfe retail complex, Oranienburger Straße and the Scheunenviertel offer a wealth of restaurants, bars, small shops and cultural institutions.
The Famous Berlin Curry Wurst
Although not the most refined dish, the Berlin Curry Wurst is as famous as the Brandenburg Gate. The Curry Wurst was invented on the 4th of September 1949 by Herta Heuwer, who offered fried scalded sausage with a tomato sauce made of tomato paste, curry powder, Worcestershire sauce and an additional secret ingredient at her local food stand. Since then Curry Wurst has become Berlin‘s most famous local snack and can be found at almost all food stands in the city.
Art in Berlin: from the Museum Island to the East Side Gallery
Situated in the middle of the River Spree, the Museum Island hosts five museums and has been a World Heritage Site since 1999. The Pergamon Museum, the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, and the Bode Museum hold treasures from across the centuries and offer a wide variety of exquisite art work and ancient sculptures. Along with its world class museums Berlin is equally famous for its street art and graffiti which can be found throughout the city. In 1990 an international group of artists expressed their reactions to the fall of the Berlin Wall in paintings. The artwork covers the east side of the remainders of the Wall along the banks of the River Spree in Friedrichshain. This is how Berlin’s East side Gallery was born.
Nature in Berlin: The Green City
With more than 2,500 public recreational and green spaces Berlin can truly be called a green city. The Tiergarten, the forest in Grunewald and the Hasenheide are just a few spots which are perfect for recreational outdoor activities, a barbecue or just a little break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Water lovers can enjoy Berlin's many lakes as well as its two rivers, the Spree and the Havel.
Berlin is famous for its party scene. Few cities in the world can compete with Berlin when it comes to the sheer diversity of nightlife. From pubs housed in derelict ruins to funky beach bars, from Imax cinemas to intimate theatres, from open air concerts to trendy clubs: Berlin offers the perfect spot for everybody any day of the week.
